Five Plumbing Tips From The Pros

With cooler temperatures lingering on the horizon, it’s finally time to take some precautionary measures to make sure that your home plumbing system is in tip-top shape to endure the colder Alabama weather. If you are having a plumbing problem, be sure to call your local professionals at Dixie Electric, Plumbing & Air to remedy your issue. If your plumbing system is currently functioning properly, below we have listed some basic steps you can take at home to make sure you make it through the winter without any problems:

  • Drain or flush water heater—Regular draining/flushing has been proven to lengthen the life of your water heater. The process of draining rids the equipment of debris and minerals that could cause it to malfunction. The more you use your water heater, the more often it requires maintenance.
  • Clean Your Drains—During the holiday season, your drains probably took a beating from increased food debris, cooking oils and other cooking by-products. Prevent pipe clogs and backups by whipping up this easy concoction to help clear out your drains; 1/2 C of baking soda followed by a 1/2 C white vinegar & flush with boiling water after 10 min. This should help push along any unwanted accumulation.
  • Caulk or Grout—around tubs, shower and sink. Reapply if necessary. Though it may seem like a simple thing, caulking and grouting around your plumbing fixtures is vital. It may need replacing from time to time but it is an important combatant to preventing water damage on walls or areas surrounding plumbing fixtures.
  • Replace your water filtration filter—Water filters work by catching or trapping large debris in the pores while other contaminants attach themselves to the surface of the filter media (usually carbon, charcoal and a blend of other purifying elements). When the filter becomes clogged with debris or the filter media is saturated to the point where no more contaminates can be absorbed, it must be changed to work effectively.
